11 Chosen as Beacons of Peace

Zamboanga City – ELEVEN outstanding young college and high school graduates were named as this year’s “Young Peace Weavers” in recognition of their contribution in spreading the word of peace within their families and among peers as well as the whole school environment and community.

The awardees for this year include four from the college and seven secondary high school graduates.

Awardees for college include Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s (ADZU) Mary Rose Jean Andrada and Aliza Balbon and Western Mindanao State University’s (WMSU) Kenny Fernando and Rajah Khan.

High school awardees are WMSU’s Ma. Eloiza Eijansantos, Nouf Hassan of Arena Blanco National High School, Mindzmar Kulani of Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School, Rica Sue de Sosa and Milaluna Said of Zamboanga City High School (Main), Paolo Francis Lopez of Regional Science High School and Pilar College’s Carlo Zion Gonzales.

This year’s awardees were so far the highest in number since the award program given by Peace Advocates Zamboanga (PAZ) and Interreligious Solidarity Movement for Peace (IRSMP) was launched in 2001. It was sponsored by PAZ and SALAM Peace Foundation until SALAM’s part was taken over by IRSMP.

PAZ President and IRSMP Lead Convenor Fr. Angel Calvo said the Young Peace Weavers Award is an honor given to secondary and college graduates who show consistent efforts and initiatives to propagate the word of peace and for projecting an image of a true role model to their peers and communities.

Indeed, this year’s awardees showed excellent achievement not only in peace-building but as well as in academics.

Young Peace Weavers is the counterpart for youth of the annual Peace Weavers Awards given by PAZ and IRSMP to individuals or organizations who show exemplary performance in the field of community- and peace-building.

Previous Peace Weavers awardees include former Zamboanga’s Archbishop Carmelo DF Morelos, the late Muslim leader and educator Prof. Amilusin Jumaani, the late Isabela City Mayor Lus Biel, II, the Subanon tribal council GOKUM-Sog Pito Kodulungan, and UNDP’s Mr. James Alih T. Abdul, among others.
