29 Graduating Senior High and College Students are Young Peace Weavers 2018

In their non-stop pursuit to mold peace champions in this city, Peace Advocates Zamboanga (PAZ) and the Interreligious Solidarity for Peace (ISP) conferred the Young Peace Weavers Award to 18 deserving graduating senior high school students and 11 graduating tertiary students for this school year, all of whom have made significant contributions to peace in their respective schools and communities.


For 17 years now the Young Peace Weavers Award is given annually by PAZ and ISP to the peace-conscious students in high school and college in both public and private schools.


After had been endorsed by their respective schools, the nominees had undergone the selection process with the screening committee whose members are from ISP and PAZ. The major criterion is the active participation of the nominees in efforts in peace building and instilling an awareness of the process towards the culture of peace as against the culture of violence in their schools and communities.


The 18 awardees from the senior high school are: Amina Shayne Halil (Regional Science High School); Aurelli Maria Bettina Lim (Pilar College); Alvin Rey Riclade (Southern City Colleges); Ardis Asta (Talon-Talon National High School); Maid Jammang (Arena Blanco National High School); Marvin Abdul (STI College Zamboanga); Shaira Mae Napii (Claret School of Zamboanga City); Abdul Nasser Alimoda (Filipino Turkish Tolerance School); Zyra Jazmine Jimenez (Ayala National High School); Jhonel Sumeguin (ECC-Baluno National High School); Jimboy Sabuclacao (Ramon Enriquez Memorial School); Kristine Anne Nicole Pantaleon (Culianan National High School); Alhamdi Aspalal (Tuan Datu Hadji Abdullah Nuño Integrated School); Erika Jenn Quisil (Maria Clara Lorenzo Lobregat National High School); Sean Jay Panglilingan (Tictapul National High School); Khevin Alvarado (Vitali National High School); Inshira Hussin (Tagasilay National High School) and Chabelita Benito (Bunguiao National High School)


While, the 11 awardees from the tertiary level are: Airon Canizares (Western Mindanao State University); Carlo Alejandro (Western Mindanao State University); Sitti Shaira Dompol (Western Mindanao State University); Mervin Cabato (Western Mindanao State University); Vea Mae Guzman (Western Mindanao State University); Aissah Anudin (Western Mindanao State University); Mary Angel Aghon (Winzelle International College); Jordan Lascota (Ateneo de Zamboanga University); Ruth Bermejo (Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology); Hazel Delos Santos (Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College) and Raffy Laliyah (Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College).

Enhancing GAD Mainstreaming in Zamboanga and Basilan Communities

Ms. Maisie Faith Dagapioso , Program Coordinator of Katilingban Sa Kalambuan , Inc. facilitated the pre-presentation of the Project Proposal to the body.

In its continuous program support on Participatory Governance, ZABIDA, through its member-organizations in Zamboanga City, Reach-Out ot Others Foundation, Katilingban Sa Kalambuan Inc. and Nagdilaab Foundation, Inc. in Basilan, conducted an Enhancing GAD Mainstreaming session.

For Zamboanga City, around 80 Barangay leaders and members of the Sector Groups were gathered from March 21 to March 22 held at LM Hotel, Tetuan, Zamboanga City. While, about 30 Barangay Leaders and Sectoral Group members from Barangay Townsite of Maluso Municipality and Barangay Matikang of Lantawan Municipality conducted the activity from March 22 to March 23 of this year in Isabela, Basilan.

The main purpose of the activity is to provide technical support to the Partner-Barangays in identifying and prioritizing its GAD Plan implementation and to provide further technical knowledge on Gender and Development as a political concern in their communities.

As a result of their workshop, the participants presented a proposal on a specificied priority GAD activity from their Plan. Both in Zamboanga City and Basilan, the Department of the Interior and Local Government participated as one of the panelists to provided technical guidance in improving and strengthening their proposals.

ZABIDA is currently implementing the Convenio 2 Project in the Philippines, supported by the Spanish Cooperation for International Development Agency (AECID) and Manos Unidas in Spain. The Gender and Development program intervention is part of its Participatory Governance Program. Photo-Feature: Right to Play Facilatators’ Trainers Training

“One of the rights of children is Right to Play” as stated in the principles of UNCRC. Last March 26-27, 2018, KKI conducted a Trainer’s Training for Play Facilitators that are Day Care workers and teachers, Community Leaders, Children & Youth and Boses ng Kabataan. The TOT’s objectives were; 1. Understand the concept of children’s right to sports and play; 2.Enhanced the Capacity of the participants and; 3.Build confidence and competence among the participants to plan and implement play activities in their respective communities. GAD Storytelling and Writeshop

In connection to the celebration of the International Women’s Month, ZABIDA conducted a Story–Telling and Writeshop for Healing and Advocacy last March 9- 11, 2018 at the Social Action Center ( Euntes). More than 15 women leaders identified from the ZABIDA – GAD Partner Barangays and Line-Agencies such as the Philippine National Police, Office of the City Social Welfare and Development and Gender and Development City Office. The main objective was to capacitate trainers in developing potential facilitators for VAWC story telling and write shop as a strategy for women healing and rights Advocacy.

The participants underwent Healing Process facilitated by Ms. Mariam Suacito, Executive Director of Nagdilaab Foundation inc. (NFI) together with Ms. Rosie France Montojo, program coordinator of Peace Advocates Zamboanga Foundation Inc. (PAZ). An introduction on the Violence Against Women and Children Realities (VAWC) was discussed by Mr. Ronald Cervas of Office of City Social Welfare and Development, Women’s Right for Protection and the role of Commission on Human Rights (CHR-IX) and as Gender Ombudsman, lectured by Mr. Daniel Paculanang and Mr. Roneale Ventus.

The participants have also shared their story through Creative Writing given by Ms. Frencie Carreon as part of the healing process and strategy for Story telling approach. The activity was in coordination with Katingban sa Kalambuan Inc. (KKI), Reach out to Others Foundation (ROOF), Peace Advocates Zamboanga Inc. (PAZ) and Nagdilaab Foundation Inc. (NFI).
