Arbor Day na Ciudad

In line with the annual celebration of the Philippine Arbor Day, last weekend, June 25, Saturday, the City Government of Zamboanga, in its Ordinance No. 281, the city, contextualized this event as “Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga”.

For this year, since the most parts in Mindanao, including Zamboanga experienced “El Niño”, the Local Government Units focused on Mangrove Reforestation project. The activity was held in a designated site at the National Greening Program (NGP)area in Barangay Talon-Talon.

A total of 9,500 mangrove propagules are set to cover 2.3 hectare of the mangrove forest site. This activity which aims to encourage active participation of all citizenry nationwide to plant trees to environmental protection, preservation and conservation efforts.

“Planting mangrove trees are important because they provide ecological benefits in terms of protection, marine products, a breeding grounds for our fisheries, supply for foods to those people who were living in the coastal area that can sustain their day to day needs,” said Acting Mayor Cesar Iturralde in his message.
“its just not only human being who are benefitting to these mangrove tress but even other living organism because it is one of biological diverse ecosystem globally,” Iturralde emphasized.

Various stakeholders participated in the activity such as; the government offices; private/business sectors, security forces, academe; BLGUs; civil society organizations and the Brgy. Talon-Talon constituents and its nearby barangays. (reports from Jodalyn Pagal)
