Claret Parishioners Oriented on the Climate Change Adaptation

The Claret Parish of Zamboanga City in celebration of its Annual Feast day with the theme, “Building Ecclesial Communities in journeying the Gospel and Solidarity with the Poor and Environment,” initiated an Orientation on the Climate Change Awareness and Action-Planning on October 20, at the Claret Lay Leaders Formation Center at San Jose Road this city.

As one of the activities set for the feastday, about 30 Claret parishioners attended the said orientation that was organized by the Claret Parish in partnership with Zamboanga-Basilan Integrated Development Alliance, Inc. Graced by Resource persons, Mr. Felipo David Malcampo from the Philippine Information Agency that gave an Overview on Climate Change; Definitions, Effects, Causes and Implications and what are the Initiatives, Measures for Adaptation and Mitigation; and Dr. Eduardo M. Bisquera Jr. from the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources gave an update regarding the Status of Watersheds of Zamboanga City, Climate Change Adaptation Plan and Council, and the Role of CSOs in Climate Change Adaptation (CCA).

In his welcome remarks, Claret Parish Priest, Fr. Angel A. Angeles, CMF reminded the participants that, “Stewardship is not only in terms of money and material things, but of moral obligations, and that is we show how we care for our earth,” Fr. Angeles said.
He also mentioned that it is everyone’s moral obligation to take care of our common home that we call, Earth.

Facilitator Ms. Jannet Francisco gave the brief orientation on how the partnership of ZABIDA and Claret Parish formed and how the partnership journey to provide humanitarian services to the vulnerable communities.

The Climate Change Awareness and Action Planning initiated is a way of responding to the call of the Gospel and the Church to promote Integrity of Creation and mitigate negative consequences of the destruction of the environment which is affecting the most vulnerable, the poor in our communities. Claret Parish and its chapels are not spared of floods, pollution, and other man-made disasters every year and ZABIDA, as secretariat of the newly-formed CSO Climate Change Adaptation Alliance is in collaboration with the Parish for this activity.

The participants were encouraged to make an Action plan as a Parish on how to contribute in responding to the call for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation that can be part of the annual feast day celebration and would set an activity for the environment that would become its tradition as a part of their advocacy. Some plans can also be later on be incorporated or linked with other Civil Society Organizations that have the same programs.
