Culture of Peace Training given to DPLMHS Student Leaders
THIRTY young and hopeful peace advocates coming from the Supreme Student Government (SSG) pool of officers of Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School (DPLMHS) actively participated in the Culture of Peace (COP) orientation for student leaders dubbed as “A Day of Reflection and Dialogue” last July 9 at the their campus.
The COP orientation as a peace advocacy program of Peace Advocates Zamboanga (PAZ) aims to raise awareness among the youth especially student leaders on the present conflict situation in society and strengthen the commitment of student leaders to become involved in peace-related activities in schools, local communities and within their family.
PAZ Youth Coordinator Aldrin B. Abdurahim through the orientations strengthens the roles and functions of student leaders through integrating peace paradigms in the framework of their organization. He said that “an established leader who brings out the best for the studentry needs to instill in the minds and integrate in one’s hearts as well as other youngsters the culture of peace”.
The student leaders involved themselves in various activities, workshops and lively games which spiced up their peace inputs. Understanding peace and conflict elements help determine the right relationships in life. This had been the focal point in all the sharing and discussions.
Jake Dulay, SSG president, said that “there is a need for full cooperation among officers, laying the common ground of understanding as well as willingness to pursue their dreams of peace in the campus”.
Sr. Emma I. Delgado, OP, PAZ Executive Secretary, said the journey towards a culture of peace for young leaders will always start from oneself. She added during her session “critical threats to peace should imbibe a spirit of letting go. Allowing petals of peace to be nurtured and cultured, peace will be felt by all of us”. She said that PAZ together with the Inter-Religious Solidarity Movement for Peace (IRSMP) and Youth Solidarity for Peace (YSP) are building peace among all sectors not only in the city but also regionally, reaching the Asia-Pacific region.
The COP for SSG officers is the first formation training for the school year. That is why the administration headed by Norma Macrohon, Secondary School Principal II and Jessie Nalzaro, SSG Adviser, gratefully expressed their commitment of partnership with PAZ in the various peace advocacy programs of the organization. “SSG officers and DPLMHS will strive to propagate a culture of peace and be agents of peace in whatever possible way”, Nalzaro told the participants and organizers.
