Tree Planting Restores and Heals Life-Giving Ties with Nature

RESOLVING the alarming ecological issues today and realizing environmental peace could start with something as simple as planting a tree.

The Western Mindanao State University ’s Center for Peace and Development (WMSU CPD) led 500 students in a tree planting activity at Murok, Upper Pasonanca in this city, last December 2.

“We are planting the seeds of peace” said CPD director Marcie Carpizo metaphorically as she emphasized that “there is no real peace if we will not give attention to the environment”.

The activity was a collaborative project with Handog – Hands of Goodwill and CPD under WMSU President Dr. Grace Rebollos, who is also the Vice President of Peace Advocates Zamboanga.

“The activity is an avenue to build peace where students of different ethnicity, courses, and year levels plant together” added Carpizo.

The tree planting enjoined students of the National Service Training Program of WMSU hands-on to learn the importance of the environment and to encourage them to take an active role of caring it.

Tree planting has been a fixture in the Week of Peace observance.
