As a continuing effort for youth development and civic engagement, the Youth Civic Engagement Action Response, spearheaded by the Zamboanga-Basilan Integrated Development Alliance, Inc. (ZABIDA), Peace Advocates Zamboanga (PAZ), and ASMAE Philippines, was implemented on September 20, 2025. The initiative, aimed at fostering youth leadership among Indigenous Peoples (IP) communities, featured a full-day program that addressed both health education and human rights awareness. In the morning session held at Barangay Talon-Talon, the focus was on health and hygiene education for Sama Bajau women and youth. Facilitated by Weedianne Harvey, Nurse I of the local health center, the session emphasized proper hygiene practices—ranging from handwashing and oral care to food and environmental sanitation. The activity was informative and engaging, designed to be easily understood by all participants. Many participants came from vulnerable sectors and gained valuable knowledge they could take back to their homes and neighborhoods. Meanwhile, the afternoon session at the Barangay Hall of Arena Blanco took a different but equally important direction, centering on LGBTQ+ awareness and anti-bullying laws. Led by Ms. Archer “Hershey” Pablo, an LGBT Affairs Officer under the Gender and Development program, the orientation tackled the importance of inclusivity, human rights, and Republic Act 10627—also known as the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013. Ms. Pablo explained how this law protects students from bullying, including those based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Participants explored the distinctions between sex and gender, and the session promoted respect for diverse identities, emphasizing the need for safe spaces in schools and communities. The day-long event demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering holistic youth leadership, focusing on health, human rights, and civic participation.
