Building Leadership: IP Youth Leadership & Civic Engagement Training From June 14 to 17, 2025, the Zamboanga-Basilan Integrated Development Alliance, Inc. (ZABIDA) and Peace Advocates Zamboanga (PAZ), with support from Asmae Philippines, organized a 3-and-a-half-day leadership training for Indigenous Peoples (IP) youth. This was part of the Building Leadership Youth Program, with the theme: “Youth Leadership and Civic Engagement Training for Indigenous People's Youth.” at Nuestra Señora Del Pilar Retreat and Lay Formation Center, Mercedes, Zamboanga city. A total of 30 young participants joined the activity, all coming from the six partner barangays of Rio Hondo, Kasanyangan, Talon-Talon, Arena Blanco, Sinunuc, and Calarian in Zamboanga City. These youth leaders, who also serve as officers of their respective IP youth organizations, came together to learn more about leadership, community involvement, and how they can help promote peace in their communities. The training provided a safe and welcoming space for them to share their stories, reflect on their values, and build friendships. It became more than just a training—it was a time for growth, empowerment, and unity among Sama Bajau youth and their fellow IP leaders. Special thanks to Ms. Miriam L. Suacito for sharing her knowledge on leadership, and to Mr. Alex M. Molas for his session on civic engagement. Their insights deeply inspired the youth participants.
