Sangali High School Students Learn Peace-Building

SOME 15 student leaders of Sangali National High School (SNHS) learned the basics of peace-building during a whole-day orientation on culture of peace conducted by Peace Advocates Zamboanga (PAZ) last Saturday, March 1.

The orientation training dubbed as “A Day of Reflection and Dialogue” was held at SNHS campus and was participated in by officers of the school’s Supreme Student Government (SSG).

According to PAZ Executive Secretary Sr. Emma I. Delgado, OP, the peace orientation among student leaders is one of the approaches which PAZ has adopted to strengthen and maximize the efforts of peace advocacy in schools.

“Because they are leaders among their peers, we expect them to be peace role models in their words and deeds,” she said. She added that these young leaders could easily re-echo what they have learned to the bigger students populace, thus widening the coverage of peace advocacy.

During the daylong activity, the participants were oriented on basic understanding of peace including the basics of conflict and ways on how to deal with it through lectures and group activities. Lively games and workshops also added up to the excitement of the learning processes.

“This is new to us, but these are skills we need,” said Mively Joy Dela Cruz, the SSG President.

“Through this, we hope to become more effective as student leaders and we also want other students to also be oriented the same way,” she added.

The activity was also made possible through the support of the SNHS administration under school principal Socorro P. Canaya and SSG advisers Ma. Luisa Tabalbag, Sherrie Ann Aramal, and Erwin Eijansantos.

“We hope there will be more trainings like this. This will really help our students and the school community as a whole,” said Tabalbag in her message during the closing activity.

Besides SNHS, PAZ is also working with other public schools in the city, like Zamboanga City High School (Main), Zamboanga National High School – West, Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School , Southcom National High School , and Maria Clara L. Lobregat National High School as well as with other youth groups and community-based organizations.
